Welcome to Scientific Investigations. This Wiki is a place for you to collaborate with your peers to complete your Lab investigations. You may plan, share and present your lab report on this site. The way you present your lab is really no different to how you present it normally except that your peers can quickly and effectivley help you. Presenting your Lab on a wiki also means that you are sharing your investigation with the rest of the world. That's a big responsibility so make sure you work together. LAB: Some Metals are More Reactive than Others

Background information:

Silver is a metal. Gold is a metal. They are different colours. What else is different about them? You probably know something is different between gold jewellery and silver jewellery. If you don’t know, ask someone at home. Read the title of this lab. Think: How do the two metals gold and silver prove the title is true?

Chemists look for patterns in nature. Remember there are about 80 metals on the periodic table. Read again the title of this lab. Think: What would a chemist want to know about the 80 metals? What use is that information to Human Ingenuity?

You will be given a pile of different metals. You have 5 metals, not 80! You are also given some acid. You will have iron, aluminium, copper, magnesium, and zinc. The acid will be hydrochloric acid.

You will design a fair test that will let you rank the five metals in order from most reactive down to the one that is least reactive (the one that reacted the smallest amount).

Format for this lab report:

This will be a COLLABORATIVE WIKI Lab report. This means you, and your assigned partner, will be doing the lab together and then creating one lab report, as a collaborative team that you will submit. All work on this report will be done electronically on your wiki page. Your teacher will be looking at all versions of the wiki to see who added what ideas, who edited which part etc.

Things to think about:

• You will get the same mark as your partner, except for Criterion F: attitudes and engagement. This will be assessed by your teacher during the lab as well as a result of the peer assessment your partner completes for you and the amount of contributions you made to your wiki.
• Bring your camera to include pictures of your equipment and results to make your wiki more visual.
• Use hyperlinks to other resources or related information you find.
• Edit your partner’s work. As a collaborative team you are both responsible for commenting and editing each other’s part of the wiki. This could include editing for spelling errors, making sure all sections are included, the language is ‘scientific’ enough and that all work is clear and concise.
• Remember: you are a team!

Hypothesis:

Before we do any experiment we are asked to predict what we think the answer will be. Think: How could you find out what the order should be for these five metals? Write your hypothesis using the correct sentence: If...then...because... (Be sure to explain why you made your guesses).
